World hunger is a specter that haunt humanity since a long time ago. If you think it just a scarcity of foods and goodies and it solvable with the right foods distribution- This problem is actually more complex than what you think. It caused by many factors that connected with one and another.
The first factor is global warming or known as climate change is one of the factors that affect food supplies. An uncertain climate such as a year of not enough or too much rain, scorching spell or cold snap at the wrong time can have a significant effect on crop yields and even livestock production. Because of the rarity of the foods, the foods price will go up as the law of supplies and demands applied. Not only that, the increment of the food price is also affected by the cost to ship goodies since most of the fuel is an oil based and oil industry is overwhelmed to deal with an extreme weather especially scorching weather.
In addition to the rarity of the foods, a high demand for foods also makes an impact to increase the price. Even with global warming that affect the food supplies, everyone still needs to eat. For the last couple of years, the population is exploding around the world. It's a good news and a bad news at the same time. While longevity is rising up, the global warming inhibits the demand for food supplies. For that reason, the increment of foods price is inevitable.
For some of us maybe the increment of food supplies is still affordable, but not for some people with poverty. Over 9 million people die worldwide each year because of hunger and malnutrition while most sufficient economy households waste their uneaten foods. That act could be seen in big cities such as Jakarta, Bangkok, and Detroit because of a big gap of poverty. Poverty isn't created itself, it led by something else. In some cases, a conflict or a war in a region can lead to poverty in their society.
If we hear the word "Somalia", we will think guns, rebellion, and chaos country. In the past, Somalia had a golden age while reigned by Sultan Yusuf Mahamud Ibrahim back in the 17th century. Maybe that story is only a bedtime story for a child in Somalia right now. Since World War II started, the government in Somalia became a mess and it's getting worse as time goes. This war put the society into chaos and without a working society welfare is just a dream. No one can buy food if no one grows it, yet if it is grown by someone, it would be incredibly expensive or they would just consume it for themselves and their family. This scarcity of foods really hurt the society.
On the other side, at the city that full of skyscrapers, inside the 20th story building there still people that go through malnutrition. It happened not because there is no option of food to choose from, but people's awareness of healthiness relating to food is still low. For instance, while America is a developed country, but the number of obesity in America is more than 30% on adult over 20 years old. This is why WHO and other health institution make policies about food and nutrition.
In brief, to end the world hunger is not just to have distributed the foods and goodies evenly all around the world. The key to solve this problem is actually the humanity itself. I know it seems so phony or even cliche but it is what it is. Maybe somewhere in the alternate universe, this problem is solved and the utopia is achieved.
